You should choose your direction carefully to avoid the edges of the map. 

Study the Elevation

The mountain courses are not flat and contain many different heights. Moving the ball onto a downward slope will make it roll much further. You can use these hills to save your best cards for later turns. However, an upward slope will stop your ball very quickly. You must look at the terrain symbols to predict where the ball will stop. 

Master the Hazards

Dangerous obstacles like water and sand pits fill the higher levels. You must fly over gaps and avoid landing in soft sand that stops all movement. Some tiles are very narrow and require perfect card selection. If you fall off the mountain, you must restart your attempt at the hole.
